Martina Mullins – A member of the ICB Charity Team
The International Club of Bangalore supports Child Care India, which educates 500 underprivileged children from Kindergarten to 10th Standard at their own free Divine Mercy School in Hennur, North Bangalore. It provides after school tuition for children in local slums, quarries and villages and has a hostel for 35 boys.
We are sharing a story of 15 of their past pupils: During Covid times, the school provided tablets and dongles to ensure the students continued class work from their humble, simple homes.
Many of these students were in 9th Standard during those times and got exceptional results in their final 10th Standard exams. They progressed to PU (pre-university) courses within the Hennur area and have kept in regular contact with the school, its Director Fr. Gerard V.B and Principal Ms. Vinita Fernandez.
Currently, they are waiting for College Acceptance in courses ranging from Science, Medicine, and Computer Science. They are required to give interviews. ICB members Sinead Ellison and Martina Mullins jumped at the chance to give them encouragement and support that helped them make the most of their potential.
CALMING THE NERVES
As we know, college interviews can be a daunting experience for many. The pressure to impress and stand out can be overwhelming. However, amidst the nerves and uncertainty, we created short mock interviews to practice and refine their interview skills in a low-stake environment.
FEEDBACK IS KEY
This helped the students become more comfortable with the interview process, to improve their communication skills, and identify areas for improvement before the actual interview. We worked together so they could make adjustments and perform better when it really counts!
I am sure you will join me in wishing them every success. At the time of going to print, 7 students were accepted to colleges offering Science.
If you would like to become a volunteer at any of our 16 charities, we will ensure you get the perfect fit.
FYI: Pre-loved/used iPads can be a great benefit to these college students as they start their studies this June, so if you can offer, please reach out to charities@owcbangalore.org.
